Conference: Play in Support of Hospital Care for Children

25.02.2018

Can you imagine that your child does not want to leave the hospital after hospital treatment because there are better toys there than at home? Or that your child wants to go back to hospital because his or her stay during hospitalisation was exciting and ‘fun’?

If this sounds to you like a VIP service in an expensive private hospital, you guessed wrong! This is the description of the environment in the children’s ward of the state-run hospital in the town of Targovishte, given by a parent whose child has recently been a patient there.

Designated space for play and free activities in the hospital of Targovishte

For two years now, there has been a designated space for play and free activities in the hospital where children and the accompanying adults can spend time in a meaningful play and communication. This achievement is a result of the efforts of the Club of NGOs – Targovishte, the Worldwide Orphans Foundation Bulgaria, and the state-run hospital in Targovishte.

On 22nd February 2018, the three organisations hosted a conference at which they shared their experience and good practice in implementing play activities in the hospital. Presenters and experts from other places in Bulgaria also participated, including medical doctors, nurses, and clinical psychologists.

The conference was moderated by Dr Apostol Apostolov, Chair of Botanica Life Foundation.

We wish best of luck to this wonderful initiative and its partners and hope that many more hospitals in Bulgaria will follow in the footsteps of the hospital in the town of Targovishte.
